Possum Trot

This is a small spot in the road outside of Calvert City in Marshall County, bearing one of my favorite Kentucky town names. (Dogtown, Fairdealing, Scale, and Symsonia are also in the general vicinity)

While Googling Possum Trot, I came across tasithoughts' blog post featuring a Mormon missionary's diary reminiscences of proselytizing there in the early 1980s, a discussion about a local full service Harley shop called Possum Trot Choppers, and Brittany Donald's blog showing a photo of the Possum Trot Quick Mart (complete with cartoon possums scampering across the sign).

  1. I thought this was going to be an article about Sewing Factory that now makes military uniforms that is only about a mile from where I live and that used to make stuffed animals in the seventies and early eighties. I still have a stuffed animal that they made of HeeHaw's donkey.

  2. Tell me more... Google searches for "possum trot sewing factory" and "possum trot military uniforms" didn't bring up anything.

  3. I live an hour or so from there, in Fulton. All Possum Trot has going for it is a sewage treatment plant, and a couple of Scout (girl and boy) camps near by.

  4. Possum Trot was a factory in McKee, Kentucky that made stuffed animals in the seventies and early eighties. They must have also had a license with Heehaw because they started making stuffed animal versions of the HeeHaw characters like the chicken and the donkey before they closed down.

I believe from the eighties through the nineties it was just a sewing factory, but I don't think it was called Possum Trot and they didn't make stuffed animals anymore during that time.

During this decade, I think it has been taken over by the government and they make military uniforms.

It is just outside of downtown McKee and close to IGA, The Jackson County Board of Education, and The Bond Memorial Ball Park.

  5. I love Kentucky area names. It seems like all of the interesting ones are in clusters. Gallatin County has a bizarre cluster of some great dirty-sounding ones.

  9. I recently found a teddy bear (actually a UK wildcat!) that my parents were going to throw out. It is from the Possom Trot factory in McKee and it says 1979 on the tag. I was trying to find something out about the Possum Trot company and found you guys. I actually live near Possom Trot (the town) in Paducah, which is "Halfway between Possum Trot and Monkey's Eyebrow" as the old T-shirts they used to sell around here said.

    Anyway, thanks for the info.
