Big Bone Lick, so named because of the
Pleistocene megafauna fossils found there, is one of Northern Kentucky's most popular attractions. The mammoths and other creatures are believed to have been drawn to this location by a prehistoric salt lick. Although the area is quite beautiful, and the fossils on display are amazing (including a 1,000 pound Mastodon skull), Big Bone Lick's primary claim to fame for most would seem to be the double-entendre of its name.
The Big Bone Lick state park is located in the small town of
Big Bone in Boone County.
